New President Named for San Jose City College (San Jose, Calif.) —Following a nationwide search, Dr. Rowena M. Tomaneng has been selected as the next president of San José City College (SJCC). A first-generation immigrant from the Philippines, Dr. Tomaneng has been an educator in the California Community College system for nearly 25 years, serving most recently as President of Berkeley City College (BCC), a position she has held since 2016. "We are very pleased to have a candidate of Dr. Tomaneng's caliber to serve as the next president of San José City College," said Dr. Byron D. Supporting Students in Need and Maintaining Affordable Education Are Top Priorities among SJECCD Constituents (San Jose, Calif.) —San José – Evergreen Community College District (SJECCD) commissioned an independent survey this month showing residents are highly compassionate towards the current challenges faced by today's local students—including food insecurities, hunger, and homelessness. Another top priority identified by the community was maintaining affordable education at a reasonable price to continue to increase opportunities for local students to earn college credits, certifications and job skills, and transfer to four-year universities. "The community realizes that the cost of housing in the Bay Area is continuing to rise and is getting out of control," said SJECCD Chancellor Byron D. Clift Breland. "Many students at San Jose City College and Evergreen Valley College are facing homelessness and hunger and we must ensure they have access to basic needs like food and childcare so they can continue to pursue their education and receive the skills they need to stay in school and work in our community." ACCREDITATION FULLY REAFFIRMED FOR EVERGREEN VALLEY COLLEGE AND SAN JOSE CITY COLLEGE (San Jose, Calif.) — The San José – Evergreen Community College District (SJECCD) learned in early June 2018 that both of its Colleges, Evergreen Valley College (EVC) and San José City College (SJCC), received reaffirmation of their accreditation status until 2023 by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). The reaffirmed accreditation comes after ACCJC reviewed follow-up reports and evidentiary materials submitted in March 2018 after ACCJC accreditation site visits to both colleges in October 2016. In letters to College presidents Keith Aytch and Dr. Byron D. Clift Breland of Evergreen Valley and San José City Colleges, respectively, ACCJC President Richard Winn expressed his appreciation to both presidents "for the diligent work and thoughtful reflection" both Colleges took in preparing their accreditation reports and materials. "ACCJC accreditation is a hallmark of excellence and we are grateful for ACCJC's work in ensuring that we continue to meet their high standards for institutional effectiveness," said Dr. Deborah Budd, SJECCD chancellor.
